User Research for Product Managers

User Research for Product Managers is a course targeted to the PM community that wants to know how research can improve their product. Products managers will learn to apply user research in their product strategy. We will start off with a quick introduction to user research and various methodologies and their impact. Then we will move on to how research is used to build a user-centric product. We will help you understand and define metrics for your product and how to measure them. Lastly, we will also discuss how research can be used to validate your product with end users in a fast-paced environment and you will conduct some research to understand its impact on a product.

Module 1Importance of research for PMs

Approx time: 90 mins

We will start this course with an introduction to UX research and its importance from the point of view of product managers. Through case studies, we will show the cost of not studying users of your product. We will also go over the ROI of conducting research as well as what research to conduct, when and how.

Module 2Common problems and barriers to scaling products

Approx time: 90 mins

In this module, we will talk about the common problems product managers face with a product, ex onboarding, abandonment, unoptimized usage and also discuss why these problems exist. We will also go over the various barriers to scaling products such as scaling to different segments of users, language and income barriers, and how we can overcome some of these.

Module 3Listening to users

Approx time: 120 mins

In this module, students will learn how to listen to the users of their products and information coming from various channels such as marketing, customer support data, or founder-led features. For example, you added the requests provided by sales or marketing but your users are still not using those features and you don’t know what went wrong. Students will also learn about what metrics to measure, how to measure and additionally who should be measuring them.

Module 4Applying research insights

Approx time: 90 mins

In this module, students will learn how to apply research insights to prioritize features – should the feature be added or removed? What are the influencing factors and what should you measure? We will also discuss cross-collaborations within the organization and how to solve conflicts between engineering, design and sales.

With a Master’s degree in Digital Communication and Media from the University of Washington, Jahnavi initially worked in the advertising and digital media domain, which gives her a unique perspective on human behaviour. Outside work, Jahnavi teaches User Research at the Symbiosis Centre for Liberal Arts. She also experiments with pottery and baking, often bringing her culinary treats to work!
